Charging Issues Got You Down?

It’s happened to all of us before. You plug your phone in right before bed. Drift off to sleep. Then when you wake up, you see your phone hasn’t charged at all! Or you have to plug the charger in at just the right angle to make a connection Either way, there could be an issue with your charge port.

Overtime, plugging and unplugging your phone causes wear and tear to the inside of your charge port. When temperatures change, it can cause the port to expand or contract. Using aftermarket charging cables (gas station specials) can also cause damage. Many of these aren’t the exact specifications as your original OEM charger.

If you put your phone in your pocket or purse, debris (lint, dirt, etc) gets caught in the port. This can cause blocks or dirty contacts.

When someone comes in to one of our stores, it’s about 50/50 on whether the port needs to be cleaned or actually repaired.

Things you can do at home to extend the life of your charge port:

  • Only use the original OEM charger or an aftermarket one that is OEM/MFI certified (MFI = Made for iPhone)
  • Only plug your phone in to charge once per day
  • Use a phone case that covers the charge port
  • Get the port cleaned once every 4 to 6 months

At Phone Doctors, it’s always free to come in and have your charge port tested and cleaned. If you have a piece of an old charger stuck in the port, we can usually get it out for you at no cost as well. We do keep replacement charge ports in stock for most iPhones, iPads, and Samsungs.
